Silent Seasons Book Review

Let me start by saying that I'm an active reader (when I got the time to read with my work schedule). Spiritual books are my go to when I need that inspiration and spiritual guidance. That is why I having this blog post review on a book that I read. (Note: This is not a replacement for my Bible).

So, I brought a book off Amazon called Silent Seasons: Trusting God When You Don’t Understand by Heather Lindsey. The book cost $13.95 with shipping that total my cost to be $19.95. Let me give you a little bit of background on Mrs. Heather Lindsey. Heather is married to her husband Cornelius Lindsey for 7 years now and have two children together. She is a Michigan native. She is the founder of The Pinky Promise Movement that promotes honoring God with your life and body if you are single or married. She has also written five best selling books including Pink Lips & Empty Hearts, A Perfect Recipe, Dusty Crowns, The Runaway Bride and The Purpose Room. Now, before I purchased Silent Seasons, I have never read any of her previous books. I do like her page on Facebook and Instagram. Now I was attractive to what the book main focus was on the back. If you look down below I will have a copy of the book as well as the back.

I felt this book was for me because I too is going through my own personal Silent Season with God currently and by reading this I can be able to understand everything. For me, I wasn’t having this book be a substitute during this season but as a guiding tool for uplifting, motivation and see someone else season unfold. Anyways, after taking me like two weeks to complete, I have a lot to say. This is my thoughts and opinion about the book. I have read the reviews which women have been giving their five stars on how great the book was as a whole. You know what, I feel like one of those people (which I am) that reads the book before going to the movies to criticize everything that they did wrong or didn’t add into the film. This book was honestly a poor let down and I didn’t even have any expectations.

Now before you come at me with messages and all the negativity, hear me out. I really felt this book was meant for a baby Christian. The introduction, first and second chapter of the book was a great start, which I loved. As you continued reading, I started to get a little bored and repetitive. The way she was wording things were just like spoon feeding a baby Christian who is still on milk. It was mostly the church answers you would hear “You just need to pray and ask for forgiveness,” “Turn from you wicked ways,” and “Don’t be relationships that are unyoked.” I didn’t even like the ending because I felt the ending was rush with a cliché. I only highlighted 12 sentences and I didn’t even write notes on the side of the margins to reflect on like I usually do.

Personal, everybody goes through their own Silent Season. What I thought the author Heather failed to portray in her book (which I believe she was led by God to write this), was the fact that many different seasons people go or have gone through was lightly touched and sometimes overlap throughout in every chapter. I felt like some of these chapters where in the wrong spot in the book. I’m not sure if I’m meant to write my own Silent Season [idea]….

I felt like there should have been different Silent Season topics (jobs, relationships, purpose etc.) with two chapter for each of them to talk about those seasons, have scripture from the bible to back it up, and how to overcome them in your silent season/other have done so. She did mention a few stories and used doctrine (scripture) to back up her message. She even used her own life as an example. Honestly, I felt that this was a great start or an overview on Silent Seasons in a Wikipedia sense. For instance, my professors in college would tell us that we are not to use Wikipedia was a source, but can be us as a summary to understand what the topic is about before looking for primary and secondary sources. That’s how I take her book. I’m not saying Heather’s work is Wikipedia. This is just my mind interpretation of her work in a way to talk about the topic of Silent Seasons.

I’m not going to knock the book completely. There were some good points in book, different topics that was blended in the book. The question is will I recommend someone to buy the book? How would I rate this on a 5-star scale? If you want to check it out I can mail it to you. I’m in a giving season during my silent season. I would rate this book a 3 out 5. The thought was there. Her soul was there writing this, but felt like this should have been cooking more on a spiritual level. I will be diving in more on silent seasons and reaching out to someone. Like I mention, I may be the one to write about this topic in a more depth way. I hope you enjoyed this book review and my thought about this book that I read. Until next time OneSelfers!
